How to keep it going past week three
- Log the day, not the lesson. One row per school day. Trying to account for every subject separately is what makes people give up in week three.
- Write it the same day. A log reconstructed in April is a guess. Thirty seconds at the end of the day is the whole discipline.
- Count what actually counts. Reading together, a museum trip, and a co-op session are instruction. Decide once what you count and stay consistent.
- Total as you go. Keep a running total in the last column so you always know where you stand, instead of adding up nine months in one panicked evening.
A word on what your state requires
Record-keeping rules for homeschooling differ from state to state — the number of hours or days, whether records are submitted or simply retained, and whether anything is required at all. They can also differ by the child’s age. Check your own state’s current rules rather than a number from any website, this one included. This is a log to fill in, not legal advice.

How many hours do I need to log for homeschool?
It depends entirely on where you live. Some US states set a required number of instruction hours or days per year, some ask for attendance records without a set number, and some require no records at all. Requirements also differ by the child's age or grade. Check your own state's current rules before relying on any number you read online, including here — this page gives you a log to fill in, not legal advice.
Do I have to submit my homeschool hours log?
In some places records must be submitted to a district or umbrella school, and in others they only need to be kept in case they are ever requested. That difference matters for how carefully you keep them, so it is worth confirming which applies to you.
What should a homeschool hours log include?
At minimum the date, the hours taught, and enough of a note about subjects covered that the row still means something months later. A running total saves you adding it all up at the end of the year. This template has all four.
